Daily launches interactive map to help readers follow MPs’ money

A regional daily has created an interactive map to help readers discover where their MPs make extra cash.

The Northern Echo’s ‘The Money Trail’ investigation has examined the finances of 37 MPs across the North-East of England and North Yorkshire.

As part of its digital coverage, the Darlington-based Echo has created a fully searchable map of constituencies across the regions which link to stories about whether individual MPs have earned anything from second jobs and donors.

The newspaper splashed on the campaign’s launch on Saturday, following a national debate about MPs’ second jobs in the light of the Owen Paterson scandal.

Editor Karl Holbrook told HTFP: “The bare fact is that some of our MPs haven’t earned an extra penny from second jobs or donors, while others have doubled their £81k salaries through extra income.

“People need to know what money is behind their MP.

“So it was important that we pulled together the information of every MP in our region so constituents can see for themselves, but we were determined not to make it a party political mudslinging match.

“I’m very proud that we were able to pull it together in such a user-friendly, unbiased way. Voters can make their own mind up.”
