Daily demands ‘rail revolution’ for patch on front page

A regional daily has backed a bid to reopen three railway stations on its patch – as well as the building of a new one.

Sheffield daily The Star has lent front page backing to the bid, which has been submitted to the Department of Transport by three MPs in the city.

The bid aims to secure funding from the Government’s £500 million Restoring Your Railway Fund to restore stations in the south of Sheffield at Millhouses, Heeley and Beauchief.

The proposal would also expand Dore and Totley station and create a new station at Totley Brook.

Sheffield Hallam MP Olivia Blake, Sheffield Heeley MP Louise Haigh and Sheffield Central MP Paul Blomfield say the move would “ensure access to more sustainable modes of transport to the people of Sheffield and help rebuild the city’s economy after the Covid-19 pandemic”.

The Star splashed on its support for the proposal yesterday, pictured above.

Star business editor David Walsh told HTFP: “A head of steam is building in Sheffield around the city’s poor infrastructure.

“Campaigners are frustrated – there are a record number of rail projects on the drawing board but precious little action.

“This campaign has huge support and is an obvious win for a Government repeatedly accused of ignoring the city.”
