Coronavirus front pages named nation’s best at Regional Press Awards

Two coronavirus-related splashes have been named the best daily and weekly front pages of 2020 at the Regional Press Awards.

Organiser the Society of Editors has bestowed the respective honours upon the Teesside Gazette and the Impartial Reporter.

The Gazette won the Front Page of the Year – Daily/Sunday Paper title for its front page ‘Middlesbrough needs… Intensive Care’.

The newspaper had urged ministers in May to make helping Middlesbrough – where the Covid-19 death rate was twice the national average – a “priority for government”.

Weekly Newspaper Front Page of the Year was won by the Enniskillen-based Reporter.

The honour was given for its splash ‘We didn’t get to say goodbye’, published in April 2020.

RPAW Impartial

The front page featured a harrowing image of people in biohazard suits lowering a coffin into the ground.

It was accompanied by a series of special reports with the loved ones of those lost to the pandemic at the time.

Both the front page categories were sponsored by HoldtheFrontPage.
