Weekly launches ‘press gang’ for homeschooled children

WGPressgang.png.galleryA weekly newspaper has launched a young reporters scheme for children currently being homeschooled.

The Warrington Guardian has announced the Guardian Press Gang initiative, which aims to get young people to contribute both news and pictures to the paper.

The Guardian says it aims to publish as many contributions as possible in forthcoming editions, with those who have their work published receiving a thank you certificate.

It will also be asking teachers to share their own ideas and messages of support to pupils.

Editor Hayley Smith said: “Teachers have been doing a brilliant job of setting projects for their pupils during term time and beyond, but we hope our new Guardian Press Gang will be another way to help keep the boredom at bay over the coming weeks.

“My own household has two busy full time working parents, a 12-year-old settling into his first year at high school and a nine-year-old ready to enter his final year of primary school in September, so I’m fully aware of some of the demands on families at the moment.

“And at a time where local newspapers are so vital in keeping communities fully informed about what is happening during the coronavirus pandemic, it’s also important that our children are able to access the right kind of news and online content.

“We hope lots of children from across Warrington will be keen to get involved.”
