Ten editorial jobs among 57 created in publisher’s hyperlocal expansion

Ed Walker PicA regional publisher is creating 57 new jobs – including 10 editorial roles – as it expands its hyperlocal news platform.

Reach plc has announced the expansion of its news aggregation platform In Your Area, which will see journalism positions created in Bristol, Liverpool and Manchester, along with other as-yet undisclosed locations across the UK.

Around 43 new commercial roles will also be created, with most based in Nottingham and some in Liverpool, while four technical and administration jobs will be based in London.

HTFP reported last week that Reach had begun advertising for four of the new editorial roles working on In Your Area, following its announcement that Ed Walker had been promoted to editor-in-chief of the site.

The company is looking for a Manchester-based community editor and a Bristol-based online communities editor, as well as several two community content curators – at least two of whom will be based on Merseyside.

Ed, pictured, said: “The appetite for neighbourhood level news is strong in the UK. We see this consistently reflected in our regional audience data and by the success InYourArea has already achieved.

“Through this platform we have a way of delivering a personalised feed of the latest local news, information and more to every postcode in the UK.

“I look forward to working with the team to grow our user base in areas already served by our ‘Live’ network, as well as in regions new to Reach.”

Based on each reader’s individual postcode, In Your Area offers a “user-friendly” feed of local news along with relevant local information, such as house prices, local planning applications and traffic and travel updates.

News stories are curated from a range of regional publishers, as well as from the relevant Reach publications.

The latest recruitment drive comes after Reach announced in November was set to create 46 jobs with the launch of seven new digital-only news titles.

Jim Mullen, chief executive Officer of Reach plc, commented: “In Your Area has already shown impressive growth in a relatively short time, and this further expansion extends our leadership journey in the growing hyperlocal sector.

“Through these investments, we are continuing to bolster a highly engaged online readership in every corner of the country, while also securing the future of our trusted regional journalism.”

Good to hear of new jobs being created and good too to see a major regional publisher using their own money to develop new online news platforms to engage with local communities.
If somehow they can solve the ongoing problem of monetising increased free to view online audiences they’ll have cracked it!
    Good luck to all involved

No mention of a Picture Editor! Says how much photographers and photographs are valued.
