Six daily newspapers are among the recipients of emergency funding from Google aimed at helping news publishers through the coronavirus crisis.

Google has now published the full list of UK recipients from its journalism emergency relief fund, which has offered grants of between $5,000 and $30,000 have been made to newsrooms across the world.

More than 100 titles have benefited across the country, mainly from smaller or hyperlocal publishers.

On the list are DC Thomson dailies the Dundee Courier and Aberdeen’s Press & Journal, along with the Belfast-based Irish News and London’s City AM.

The Midland News Association, publisher of Wolverhampton daily the Express & Star and the Shropshire Star, is also a beneficiary.

A Google spokeswoman said: “In the last few months, we have provided $39.5 million in funding to more than 5600 publishers in 115 countries.

“The money is being applied in diverse and creative ways, from ensuring basic reporting needs and giving emergency stipends to allow reporters to cover the crisis, to driving audience engagement and generating subscriptions.”
