Seven out of ten trainees achieving senior status, NCTJ reveals

Seven out of ten trainees have successfully qualified as senior journalists in the past 12 months, representing an increase in the proportion who have made the grade.

The National Council for the Training of Journalists has revealed 59 candidates succeeded in qualifying as a result of National Qualification in Journalism sittings which were held in November 2019, March 2020 and July 2020.

The overall pass rate for 2019-20 is favourable when compared with 2018-19, when 65pc of candidates qualified.

Of the 59 who achieved the passing grade, 25 did so with distinction and 24 with merit.

The section of the examinations in which the highest pass rate was recorded was the e-logbook at 97pc, with 56 out of 58 passing.

In the practical skills exam 58 out of 68 were successful, representing and 85pc pass rate, while 59 out of 79, or 75pc of candidates, triumphed in the media law and ethics in practice exam.
