Reporter who covered football club he supported dies aged 68

Mark CurrieA sports journalist who covered the football club he supported for three decades has died aged 68.

Tributes have been paid to Mark Currie, who followed the fortunes of Wrexham AFC for the Daily Post for 30 years.

During his career, he also worked for titles including North Wales daily The Leader, the Derby Telegraph and Wolverhampton’s Express & Star.

Club director Spencer Harris has been among those to pay tribute.

He told the Daily Post: “As well as being a reporter, Mark was a genuine fan and he was willing to give his opinion on the club’s running irrespective of whether or not it was popular.

“I have great respect for him for that.

“Although he could be passionate with his views, they were also driven by the need to get the best outcome for the club he supported.”

Mark, pictured, began his career on The Leader in 1974, before moving to Derby as a sports sub-editor and then spending 18 months with the Express & Star.

He later returned to The Leader before joining the Daily Post’s business desk in 1988, where he successfully argued for the club to be given daily coverage in the newspaper.

In his later years he continued reporting on the club for the Non-League Paper.

was admitted to Wrexham Maelor Hospital on 9 August with respiratory problems, but he failed to recover and died on Friday.

His is survived by wife Jan and children Owen, Gareth and Bethan.

A funeral service is yet to be arranged.
