Reporter reveals voicemail threat after covering bomb hoaxer in court

Mark WilkinsonA journalist has shared a threatening voicemail sent to him after he covered a bomb hoaxer’s court case in which the caller told him he had “sh***ed his missus.”

Aidan Barlow, who works for Brighton daily The Argus, received a threat on his phone after covering a court appearance by serial offender Mark Wilkinson.

In the voicemail, a man calling himself Wilkinson told Aidan he was going to “get it”.

The abuser also claimed to have “sh***ed his missus” – although Aidan is in fact unmarried.

Details of the “slurred and angry” voicemail were published by The Argus this week after Wilkinson’s latest appearance in court for making false reports to police in Crawley.

In the message, the caller said: “My name is Wilkinson.  Mr Barlow you have had it in for me for years going back because I know for a fact that I sh***ed your missus.

“You might think you are an up and coming reporter. But I’m going to expose you as a swinging party person.

“So stop reporting my name, or you are going to get it.”

The voicemail was sent in May after the 48-year-old was put under a restraining order for racist abuse at a supermarket in Brighton, but The Argus has now revealed the transcript of the message after Wilkinson appeared before Crawley magistrates to admit two charges of wasting police time.

Wilkinson, pictured, had previously been in trouble for calling the police while drunk and claiming to have planted a bomb in Brighton on behalf of the Ulster Defence Association terror group.

Speaking to HTFP, Aidan said: “As a crime reporter I receive lots of phone calls and emails that leave me a bit bewildered. The message from Mr Wilkinson certainly stands out as one of the most bizarre.

“He has routinely caused problems with false claims to the police and been before the courts. My understanding is that he is a former army serviceman, so I hope he can get the help he needs to overcome his alcohol problems.”
