Regional news title lands coronavirus exclusive days after new site’s launch

Simon BristowA regional news magazine has landed a coronavirus exclusive days after launching its new website.

The Hull Story landed an interview with the senior doctors who worked on the UK’s first two coronavirus cases.

The story was published on Friday, a week after the magazine had launched its online arm TheHullStory.com.

The exclusive was written by co-editor Simon Bristow, a former court reporter at the Hull Daily Mail.

Simon, pictured, said: “These were the first acts in an intense drama that would later paralyse the country with lockdown.

“It’s hard to overstate the challenge these doctors faced; so little was known about the virus and they were the first medics in the country to be confronted with it. They literally wrote the rule book as they went along.

“The story is very much a tribute to those consultants and their team. They did a brilliant job and both patients survived.

“It was a privilege to meet them and hear their story first-hand.”

Other former Mail staff to work on the Hull Story include ex-news editor Rick Lyon, who is Simon’s co-editor, and former Mail chief reporter Kevin Shoesmith.

Rick said: “This was a brilliant exclusive and has helped us make a strong start with the website.”
