Photographer who covered Aberfan disaster retires aged 76

Ernie HussonA photojournalist who covered the Aberfan disaster has retired aged 76.

Ernie Husson has said farewell after covering life in Radnorshire for the Mid Wales Journal for 52 years.

Ernie, pictured, joined the Journal in the late 1960s after previously working for a group of weeklies in South Wales.

It was in South Wales, as chief photographer, that he covered the collapse of the colliery spoil tip in Aberfan, which killed 116 children and 28 adults.

He told the Shropshire Star: “To this day I can still see it.

“I’ve never been able to forget the horror of it all.”

Ernie also covered dozens of royal visits for the Journal, on one occasion persuading Prince Charles to play a guitar.

His reward was an invitation to Clarence House from the late Queen Mother, for a reception marking the centenary of the Institute of Journalists.

Ernie added: “Some of the couples whose weddings I covered back in the day, I’ve since photographed their children and grandchildren getting married.”
