Newsrooms urged to join virtual debate on future of local news

alisongowAll UK newsrooms have been invited to a meeting discussing the future of local news which will be held tomorrow.

“Slow news” venture Tortoise, launched last year by former Times editor James Harding, is set to host the virtual discussion.

The debate will explore how the coronavirus pandemic has affected both audience and the business models of local titles.

Alison Gow, pictured, president of the Society of Editors and digital editor-in-chief for Reach Regionals, will be among those joining the debate to give her insight into how regional newsrooms are dealing with the crisis.

Also speaking is Rasmus Nielsen, director of the University of Oxford’s Reuters Institute for the Study of Journalism. Tortoise partner and editor Polly Curtis will chair the event.

The meeting will take place between 3pm and 4pm. Interest parties can sign up here.
