News magazine marks 25 years in business with new book

An online news magazine is marking its 25th anniversary with a print anthology of articles it has published.

Scottish Review, which launched in January 1995, will publish the book of pieces from the last quarter of a century later this year.

The magazine was founded as a print publication by former Scotsman journalist Kenneth Roy, who died in 2018 aged 73.

The title, which went online-only in February 2008, draws on a pool of around 30 regular contributors including some Scottish journalists now working or living in the USA and France.

All the contributors are unpaid and there are no advertisements, with the magazine depending on meeting its running costs solely through the 300-plus Friends of Scottish Review.

Regular writers include Hamish Mackay, former deputy news editor of Aberdeen daily the Press & Journal, and John Loyd, of the Financial Times.

Friends give an annual standard goodwill donation of £35, and the current leading donor chips in £500 a year.

The magazine currently has 5,000 subscribers and attracts 8,000 to 10,000 readers each week.
