Government advice prompts news site’s pub critic to undergo ‘hasty rebrand’

Home drinkerA regional news website has unveiled a rebrand of its pub review column following the latest government coronavirus advice.

With customers being urged to avoid pubs and restaurants, Kent Online has unveiled a change of direction for its anonymous critic the ‘Secret Drinker’.

Instead the column, frequently the most read article on the site each Friday, will now be written by the ‘Home Drinker’.

The switch was revealed by Ian Carter, editorial director of Kent Online owner Iliffe Media, on Twitter.

Ian told HTFP: “Our Secret Drinker column has proved really popular since we introduced it last year – it’s regularly the most read article on Kent Online every Friday.

“There’s not much point in continuing to run pub reviews in the current climate, but we don’t want to deprive readers of their weekly fix, hence the hasty rebrand.

“Our Secret Drinker is a great writer and this will hopefully prove an equally-popular guide for pub enthusiasts on keeping yourself sane until we return to normality.”

Following the announcement, the Secret Drinker’s official Twitter account posted an image of a full fridge on Twitter.

In an accompanying statement, they said: “These are serious times for us all, but where there’s a will…

“I’m already missing the pub, but while I’m confined to barracks I’ll just need to check on the fridge – good, no space wasted on food I see, I’m ready to report from home.”

Secret Drinker? Dislike that anyway, so many people have a drink problem and drink secretly. Inappropriate.
