Editors showcase power of local media ahead of Regional Press Awards

The Society of Editors has launched a new campaign to highlight the power of local newspapers ahead of tomorrow’s Regional Press Awards.

The online campaign aims to showcase the “tremendous work” of local press titles, and supporters are today being encouraged to share what they love about their local paper using the hashtag #LoveLocalMedia on Twitter.

Suggestions include sharing a picture with their local newspaper, sharing the link to their favourite article this week, or highlighting a campaign they feel has really made a difference to a community.

The SoE has also published the below short video which people are being encouraged to share.

The countdown culminates with the online video announcement of the Regional Press Award winners tomorrow lunchtime.

SoE executive director Ian Murray said: “The regional press has never been more needed and recent events have shown how vital a role it plays in our communities. The Regional Press Awards are our way of shining a light on the tremendous excellence that exists in the journalism created by local titles.”

The Society of Editors organises the awards on behalf of the industry with support from a number of sponsors including the Facebook Journalism Project, Camelot, Amazon Prime Video, Google News Initiative, Cision, PA Media, HoldtheFrontPage, Luther Pendragon and the Journalists’ Charity.

After nine years of sponsorship of the Young Journalist of the Year prize, HTFP has today been announced as the sponsor of the two Front Page of the Year awards for daily and weekly/Sunday newspapers.
