€25,000 grants on offer as emergency local news fund reopened

EJCLocal news titles could win up to €25,000 each in emergency funding after a Facebook-funded scheme was reopened.

Applications are now being welcomed for the reopened European Journalism Covid-19 Support Fund, which was first launched by European Journalism Centre and Facebook Journalism Project in April.

The fund was set up to support local and regional European news organisations and journalists affected by the coronavirus crisis.

Ten UK titles benefitted from the first round of funding, with the Bedford Independent, Saddleworth Independent, London-based Social Spider CIC and the Southwark News have each receiving €25,000.

Grants of €10,000 were also awarded to Newry.ie, Clydesider Creative, the Llanelli Standard, Switch Radio, On The Wight and Altrincham Today.

For the second wave of the fund, which is now open, there are two tracks that will provide grants ranging between €5,000 and €25,000.

News organisations needing to address immediate and critical business needs can apply for the emergency fund which offers grants of €5,000, €10,000 or €25,000.

Grants of €5,000 are also on offer for freelance journalists or groups of freelance journalists.

A separate endurance fund will make awards of €10,000 or €25,000 to provide specific support to news organisations that are “pivoting their business model” during the Covid-19 crisis.

The European Journalism Fund said grants could be used to cover salaries of staff members, supplement lost advertising revenue, or even hire more freelance journalists to aid news coverage of the outbreak.

Applications can be made until this Friday night.
