A pressure group has provided a cash boost to a daily newspaper during the coronavirus crisis.

Newsquest’s pro-Scottish independence daily The National has announced a new “alliance” with the Scottish Independence Foundation, which has seen the latter offer financial support to the former.

As part of the partnership, SIF has purchased a bulk subscription deal for its members and donors at a slightly discounted price.

The group will also be contributing a weekly column to the Glasgow-based daily as part of the partnership.

SIF previously backed The National’s rally for a second independence referendum at the city’s George Square in November.

Editor Callum Baird, pictured, told HTFP: “The Scottish Independence Foundation do a lot of amazing work in Scotland, and many crucial projects simply would not have gone ahead with their support.

“We’re delighted to have formed an alliance with them to provide them with the exposure they need to accelerate their plans, and to give their donors a special subscription deal.

“The National’s coronavirus coverage has been vital so far – but our readers would agree that it’s just as important that Scotland’s only pro-independence newspaper is around to fight for indyref2.”
