Daily urges Johnson to write to readers over lockdown proposals

A regional daily has called for Boris Johnson to write directly to its readers and other households affected by proposed new lockdown restrictions.

The Yorkshire Evening Post has hit out at ministers in a front page editorial over rumours new restrictions will be introduced across the North of England to stop the spread of coronavirus.

In the comment piece, published this morning, YEP editor Laura Collins said Leeds was continuing to “scratch its head” over what the new rules would entail.

The Leeds-based daily has urged Prime Minister Boris Johnson to write a targeted letter to every household about his expectations of families based on the latest Covid-19 threat level in their area.

Laura wrote: “Time and time again this newspaper has stressed that clarity is the key, as we continue to navigate our way through this unprecedented public health crisis.

“Everything is changing around us so quickly but clear guidance is needed now more than ever.

“While we appreciate the sheer scale of the challenge that is being faced on a global scale – let alone at a national or regional level – we simply can’t afford to let confusion reign at such a critical time.”

She added: “We also want the Prime Minister to write a letter to every household next week, giving postcode specific information on what he expects of families based on the latest Covid-19 threat level.

“We need clarity. We need answers and we need them fast, before coronavirus claims more livelihoods. And lives.”

HTFP has approached 10 Downing Street for a comment.
