Daily raises thousands towards coronavirus memorial

A daily newspaper has raised thousands of pounds as it aims to create a memorial for the victims of coronavirus.

HTFP previously reported how Glasgow-based daily The Herald was campaigning to create a memorial garden to those lost to Covid-19 in Scotland.

The paper set itself a £50,000 fundraising target and has revealed close to £9,000 has been raised so far.

A specially convened steering group set up to take the garden of remembrance campaign forward has now met for the first time.

Editor Donald Martin said: “We are trying to do but something which is desperately needed given the tragic consequences of coronavirus.

“We want to create a quiet place of reflection for people and we are delighted to have the help of our steering group members to deliver the most perfect and fitting memorial to those who have lost their lives.”

A location for the site of the garden has already been chosen at Glasgow’s Pollok Park.
