Community title facing ‘grave’ financial situation, editor says

A community publication believed to be the oldest of its kind in Scotland is facing a “grave” financial situation, according to its editor.

Brian Smith has warned The New Shetlander “may not survive much longer” in an editorial for the title.

The literary and community magazine, which has been published quarterly for 73 years, is run by Voluntary Action Shetland.

The cost of printing the magazine each month is being supported by VAS’s reserves, but the organisation says this is now “unsustainable” long term.

The 292nd edition of the magazine was released this month.

In his editorial, Brian said: “Now, after 73 years, there is danger that it may not survive much longer.

“The financial situation that we face is grave.”

VAS told the Sherland Times it will spend the next five months discussing the future of the magazine with its editors.
