Charity launched in daily journalist’s memory gives £5,000 to good causes

Jo Davies 1An ovarian cancer charity set up to honour the life of a former regional daily journalist has donated £5,000 to two charities.

Jo’s Appeal was established four-and-a-half years ago in memory of North West Evening Mail journalist Jo Davies, pictured, who died in 2015 aged 38.

She had worked for the South Cumbria daily for 17 years.

The charity has awarded £2,500 each to St Mary’s Hospice, and to Bay Hospitals Charity, for the Oncology Unit at Furness General Hospital.

Jo’s widower Matt Davies presented the cheques to the local charities this month, bringing the total that Jo’s Appeal has donated to the two causes to £20,000.

Matt, a former sports editor of the Mail, said: “Furness General Hospital Oncology Unit and St Mary’s Hospice provide an absolutely vital service helping thousands of cancer patients and supporting their families.

“They carry out their work in a dedicated and professional manner in what are challenging times for the healthcare sector.”
