Boy, 10, raises £1,000 for charity after journalist’s death aged 45

A 10-year-old boy has raised more than £1,000 for charity in memory of a journalist who died recently aged 45.

Jordan Atkins has cycled a 22km route in Norfolk to raise cash for bereavement charity Nelson’s Journey following the death of Rachel Dunscombe, mother of his friend George Dunscombe.

Rachel, who used her maiden name Buller for work, was assistant editor of Archant’s Norfolk magazine and a former chief reporter of the Eastern Daily Press before she lost her battle with cancer on 19 April.

A donation page set up for the Nelson’s Journey, which helps bereaved children, had already raised close to £3,000 when Jordan, pictured, decided to undertake the challenge.

His mother Cayley told the EDP: “Jordan just feels really sorry for George because ten is no age to lose your mother.”

Rachel’s widower Matt Dunscombe said he was “hugely grateful” to Jordan for his efforts, and to everyone who had donated in Rachel’s memory.

The charity will be offering support to George and his brother Zach, 13, once lockdown is lifted.
