Bi-weekly splashes on all of its lockdown front pages

A newspaper marked 10 weeks of lockdown by splashing on all 20 front pages it had published in that time.

The bi-weekly Derry News created the special front page to show the “journey” its patch has been on during the coronavirus crisis.

The News has continued publishing despite half of its staff being placed on furlough leave due to the pandemic.

Ciaran O’Neill, managing editor of the Derry News, explained the idea behind last Thursday’s splash.

He said: “It shows just what everyone has been through.

“Obviously, for those who have lost loved ones to COVID-19 it has been much more difficult, but everyone has been affected.”

Ciaran, who recently returned to the News after two years with the BBC, added: “The pandemic has clearly been a very tough time for so many businesses, none more so than newspapers.

“However, the recent months have also shown, once again the importance of local papers in keeping communities informed and connected.”
