The circulations of most regional dailies before and after the coronavirus crisis hit have been revealed by the ABC.

The auditor has published certificates for most UK dailies showing how they were faring in the early part of this year before the effects of the pandemic hit, as well as special Covid-19 certificates for the post-lockdown period.

ABC gave all publishers the option of publishing two separate certificates due to the extraordinary circumstances of the crisis – one being a standard certificate for January to June 2020 that includes all issues outside the lockdown period, and another showing circulation for issues affected by lockdown.

The auditor has stressed the latter should not be considered comparable to non-Covid-19 certificates it has issued.

A message from ABC accompanying each Covid-19 certificate reads: “This certificate includes a period affected by the coronavirus pandemic, when publishing and distribution operations were severely disrupted.

“The purpose of this certificate is to provide transparency and continuity in ABC reporting for those issues affected by the restrictions arising from the pandemic.

“Due to the exceptional circumstances these certificates are not included in our reports and should not be considered comparable to non-Covid-19 certificates.”

A Reach plc statement on their titles’ Covid-19 period certificates adds: “From April onwards the government’s lockdown measures have impacted on casual sales levels due to both the disruption to our readers’ purchasing habits and temporary closure of a significant number of retailers.

“We have however seen considerable demand for home delivered services and our weekend editions have remained more robust than the sale for the rest of the week.

“As we have moved through this period we have experienced an improving trend as lockdown eases, retailers reopen and the sporting calendar restarts.”
