Windrush nurse who became local press journalist dies aged 98

Doreen RoweA Windrush Generation nurse who later became a local newspaper journalist has died aged 98.

Tributes have been paid to Doreen Rowe, left, who trained as a journalist after retiring from nursing.

Doreen became a reporter for Hackney Pensioners Press, a campaigning free paper in the London borough.

According to the Hackney Gazette, she also rented out rooms to people who had been denied accommodation as a result of racism.

In a statement, Doreen’s family told the Gazette: “She was a beautiful lady, very classy and intelligent.

“She lived a good life to 98 years. She took nothing for granted and loved her God, her church and family, who were very important to her.

“She will be missed greatly by all her family and friends.”

Doreen, who lived in Stoke Newington, died last month.
