Weekly wins bid to name teen murder suspect identified on social media

TreadgoldA weekly newspaper won the right to name a 17-year-old charged with murder after arguing the suspect had already been widely identified on social media.

The Mansfield Chad named Jonathan Treadgold, pictured, after a judge at Nottingham Crown Court sided with its application to identify him.

Treadgold, who is accused of the murder of Mansfield teenager Liam Peters, appeared before the court to be to be told his trial will begin on 27 January 2020.

Chad head of content Jon Ball submitted a written application to Judge Gregory Dickinson QC, prior to the 1 November hearing, requesting he make an excepting direction to revoke the Section 45 order regarding Treadgold’s identification.

The Chad highlighted the extreme seriousness of the charge Treadgold faces, the proximity of the hearing to Treadgold’s 18th birthday and the 2017 Court of Appeal hearing regarding 15-year-old killers Kim Edwards and Lucas Markham.

The fact Treadgold has already been widely identified on social media was also raised.

Content editor Andy Done-Johnson attended the hearing with trainee reporter Danielle Andrews, who has covered the case from the start.

However, the judge did not seek any further information and just addressed the whole court with the comments included in the application.

He said: “I have received an application from the Mansfield Chad newspaper for the reporting restrictions to be lifted and that is something that I am mindful to do today.

“It seems to me to be entirely right that today’s hearing should name the defendant.”

Nottinghamshire Police were called to reports a man had been stabbed at a property on Gladstone Street, Mansfield, on 1 August.

Mr Peters was taken to Nottingham’s Queens Medical Centre, but died a short time later.
