Today’s local elections prompted a weekly newspaper to replace its usual letters page with a spread of pet pictures from its patch.
The Wokingham Paper replaced its usual politically-fuelled correspondences with the photo feature to offer readers some light relief on polling day.
After issuing an appeal, close to 100 animal lovers responded with pictures of their pets for publication.
As a result of the feature’s success, the Paper is now looking to repeat it for European election day on 23 May.
Editor Phil Creighton told HTFP on Wednesday: “We normally carry a packed double page spread of letters every week – packed with lively debate and covering all political walks of life.
“Following weeks of debate over the ruling council’s policies, especially over housing, tomorrow is the day when Wokingham’s residents deliver their verdict.
“As a result of us publishing on polling day, we decided that we wouldn’t carry our usual letters pages. Rather than drop the pages for a week or run it in a reduced format we decided to invite readers to send in pictures of their pets.”
“When the paper comes out, instead of making readers go ‘grrrr’, we’ll be making them go ‘ahhhh!’ instead.”
More than 1,000 copies of this week’s edition will also be given away at Monday’s Wokingham May Fayre.
Phil added: “The event is one of the largest street fairs in the South-East and is a great way to meet readers.”
my polling station is looking ominously devoid of voters. It will be interesting to see the turnouts as Brexit might have put many off casting their vote because of the abominable behaviour of Westminster politicians of all parties.
