Regional news magazine shuts after editor’s departure

A hyperlocal news magazine which served some of Great Britain’s most northerly areas has closed after its editor left.

Am Bratach, which covers North-West Sutherland, has shut after editor Anne Macdonald revealed she would be moving on after two years in the post.

North West Sutherland Council for Community Action began publishing Am Bratach in November 1991, with trustee Donald MacLeod telling the Northern Times the decision had been a “reluctant” one.

The magazine was solvent and its financial position at the time of closure had been satisfactory.

But Donald, himself a former editor of Am Bratach, told the Times: “We took into account the long-term prospects of the publication and did not consider it feasible to provide the stand-in cover and extended support required to keep the magazine going in the short-term and to recruit another editor.”

A selection of archive material from past issues appeared in the publication’s final edition.

A statement issued on Am Bratach’s website reads: “The board of North West Sutherland Council for Community Action, publishers of Am Bratach, regrets to announce that this will be the final issue of the magazine.

“Following a decision made in April, the publication will be wound up after the May edition.

“Thanks are due to the many readers, subscribers, advertisers and contributors who have supported the magazine over almost 28 years of continuous publication.”

Am Bratach is gaelic for ‘Flag Time.’
