The 75th anniversary of D-Day dominated the front pages of yesterday’s regional newspapers as the nation honoured its heroes.
As tributes to those who took part in the 1944 Normandy Landings rang out across the world, the regional press issued its own salutes in a series of suitably moving front pages.
Some, such as Stoke daily The Sentinel, the Plymouth-based Western Morning News and the Peterborough Telegraph, highlighted the contribution of local veterans from their patch.
Others, such as The Scotsman and Portsmouth daily The News, focused on the Queen’s message of gratitude to the veterans who, as young men, helped free Europe from fascism.
Meanwhile the Manchester Evening News republished a front page from Tuesday 6 June 1944 reporting the Normandy invasion on the day it happened,
And the Newbury Weekly News featured a picture of US General Dwight D. Eisenhower’s speech to troops stationed at Greenham Common on its patch on the eve of the battle, as part of an online package covering West Berkshire’s important role in Operation Overlord.
Here is a selection of the front pages and images from across the regional press.
The Sentinel is the best of the bunch, simple, to the point and no overpowering advert. The headline on The News is lost and looks a mess.
