News site launched to combat ‘decline’ of health reporters publishes 1,000th story

A health news website launched to counteract what it sees as the declining number of specialist correspondents at newspapers has celebrated the publication of its 1,000th story.

HealthandCare.Scot was launched in January this year to cover the health and social care sectors in Scotland, and currently boasts a team of four.

Publisher John Macgill is a former editor of political magazine Holyorood who also had a 17-year career in broadcasting.

John joined by lead reporter Sarah Nimmo and reporter Judith Duffy, who was previously health correspondent and chief reporter for the Sunday Herald and health correspondent for the Daily Record.

Health and Care

Henry Anderson, a recent history and politics graduate, completes the team.

Marking the publication of the site’s 1,000th story, John told HTFP: “This is about two things.

“The first is to fill an increasing gap in coverage of health and social care in Scotland as the number of specialist correspondents dwindles yet the number of people involved in the sector – as providers and users – continues to increase.

“The other is about supporting journalism, which has always been my first love and should continue to be a career option for inquisitive communicators.”

This is an impressive site but I note it says it is currently “self-funded by the publisher” and may publish paid-for advertorials – but I wonder how sustainable that is, long-term? I’m surprised they’re not going for recruitment advertising, which would seem the obvious revenue stream, but maybe that’s in the plan.

my local weekly once had a superb health writer. She took voluntary redundancy because she was dismayed by the fall in quality of the paper and the health content is pretty much zero most weeks.
