Information Commissioner joins Society of Editors line-up

Elizabeth Denham 1The Information Commissioner has been confirmed as a speaker at this year’s Society of Editors Conference.

The SoE has announced Elizabeth Denham, left, will join the line-up for the event, which this year celebrates its 20th anniversary.

The conference will be held at Stationers’ Hall, in London, on 12 November.

Ms Denham joins three national editors in the line-up – Ted Verity, of The Mail on Sunday, Alison Phillips, of the Daily Mirror, and Chris Evans, of the Daily Telegraph.

SoE executive director Ian Murray said: “Over the past two decades the Society of Editors’ annual conference has proved itself to be the litmus test of the state of the industry.

“I’m delighted that once again we have assembled a tremendous line-up of speakers who will provide invaluable insights into what the future holds for the media here in the UK.”

Ms Denham, a former Information and Privacy Commissioner for British Columbia and Canada, has held her current role since 2016, when she took over from Christopher Graham.

She was awarded the CBE in the 2019 New Year’s Honours list.

I hope that editors will robustly challenge Ms Denham on why our public bodies are allowed to exercise their responsibilities under the Freedom of Information act in such a slapdash manner with absolutely no sanctions whatsoever.
