Daily sets Christmas goal to make £3m for industry’s longest-running appeal

YEP hhA regional daily is set to reach the £3m milestone in what is thought to be longest-running newspaper fundraising appeal in the country.

The Yorkshire Evening Post’s Half and Half Appeal, which was launched in 1982, is aiming to make the target by Christmas – being now just £3,000 short.

Proceeds from the appeal are split between two Leeds hospices – St Gemma’s and Sue Ryder Wheatfields.

Within two years of its launch, the original target of £250,000 had been reached and donations passed the £1m and £2m milestones in 1990 and 2003 respectively.

YEP editorial director James Mitchinson said: “The Half and Half Appeal has been a much loved institution in our city for almost four decades.

“I am extremely proud of the Yorkshire Evening Post and every single person that has contributed to what has to be, one of, if not the most successful long-running fundraising campaign by any local or regional newspaper.

“It’s what sets us apart from other media and keeps us very much a part of the fabric of the city and the communities we serve. The monies raised through generous donations from YEP readers has helped considerably to boost the running costs, which are desperately needed to keep our hospices functioning.

“Be it a thoughtful donation in memory of a special individual or a group fundraising challenge, every single penny is put to good use. Our hospices, whose services and care are available to everyone in the city should they need it, are vital.”
