Daily launches public poll to find patch’s greatest person

A regional daily has launched a public poll to find the greatest person from its patch.

The Glasgow Evening Times is running a contest to find the Greatest Glaswegian, with readers able to pick from a 10-strong shortlist.

Those on the shortlist have been profiled by the newspaper throughout July and August, and an online poll was launched on Wednesday.

The Evening Times advertised the competition on its front page on Wednesday, pictured below.

Evening Times deputy editor Henry Ainslie told HTFP: “Glasgow is a city that is immensely proud of its people and all they have achieved, and our Greatest Glaswegians contest aims to celebrate that.

“Our 100-strong shortlist is by no means exhaustive, but it pays homage to the individuals connected with the city who have excelled in innovation, politics, campaigning, sport, the arts and more.

“We’ve left it open to readers to make the final choice through an online vote, and we can’t wait to share the results with the city’s public and take the chance to talk up what makes Glasgow special – its people.

“The response from readers so far has been fantastic, and we’re glad to be doing something positive and upbeat at a time when there’s plenty in the news to get people down.”

Voting will close at 5pm on Wednesday 18 September.
