Daily helps ‘much-loved’ institution celebrate 100 years in business

A regional daily has produced two special publications to celebrate the centenary of a “much-loved” institution on its patch.

The Yorkshire Post has marked 100 years of family-owned company Bettys, whose first tea room opened in Harrogate in 1919.

Bettys now owns several tea rooms across Yorkshire, and is also owner of the Yorkshire tea brand.

A special edition of the YP’s magazine ran on Saturday, while a picture supplement appeared yesterday (16).

Deputy editor Ian Day told HTFP: “We produced a special edition our Saturday magazine to celebrate the centenary of the much-loved Yorkshire institution, Bettys.

“The magazine included the story behind Bettys creator, Frederick Belmont, a look at how the famous company create their best selling teatime treat – the Fat Rascal, a themed fashion shoot at Harlow Carr and a selection of favourite recipes from Bettys Cookery School founder Lesley Wild.

“To follow the magazine, a special 12-page nostalgia picture supplement was produced, publishing historical photographs from the Bettys archive charting the company over the past 100 years.”

This is exactly what good local journalism should be about – well done to all.
