Absentee MP ‘threatened to call police when questioned by reporter’

An absentee MP threatened to call the police after being confronted by a regional daily reporter at Westminster, the newspaper has claimed.

Sheffield Hallam MP Jared O’Mara was approached by Yorkshire Post Westminster correspondent Geraldine Scott after he made a rare appearance in Parliament in Saturday.

Mr O’Mara had previously not been seen in Westminster since April and has been dubbed ‘Yorkshire’s Missing MP’ by the Leeds-based Post.

But, according to the newspaper, Mr O’Mara refused to answer Geraldine’s questions on whether he will return to Parliament – or resign his seat.

The Post also claimed he repeatedly refused to answer questions on whether he was participating in Saturday’s votes on the Brexit deal and whether he thought his constituents would be pleased he had travelled to London.

In response, Mr O’Mara told Geraldine he had been “hounded” by the press, before threatening to call the police if he was questioned further.

However, a man with him – which the Post believed to be his father – confirmed he would be voting before Mr O’Mara beckoned him away and told him not to speak.

The former Labour MP, who now sits as an Independent after resigning from the party last year, previously announced he would resign from the House of Commons in September, a plan he later postponed.

Last year the Post doorstepped his constituency office in Sheffield to question where he was – with the office manager being unable to say when he had last been there.

The day after the Post’s story appeared, Mr O’Mara told the Daily Mirror that he would return to work “with immediate effect”.

The paper had also previously called for him to quit his post over allegedly misogynist, homophobic and racist comments made in the past.

HTFP has approached Mr O’Mara for a response to the newspaper’s claims.  The Post has declined to comment further.

Whatever the rights and wrongs of this MP’s conduct it must be remembered that it’s been widely reported that he has been mentally ill and has other problems.
