Coldplay inspire Radio One DJ to advertise in hometown daily

A Radio One DJ took inspiration from Coldplay by using his local newspaper to advertise his show.

HTFP reported last week how the band had revealed the track listing for their new album in a classified advert in the North Wales Daily Post due to guitarist Jonny Buckland having grown up on the newspaper’s patch.

The advert also appeared in the Exeter Express & Echo, hometown paper of lead singer Chris Martin, the Fife Free Press, owing to bassist Guy Berryman’s Kirkcaldy roots, and the Southern Daily Echo, the local paper of Southampton-born drummer Will Champion.

The stunt provided inspiration for Radio One DJ Scott Mills, who is also from Southampton and decided to place an ad in the Daily Echo on Tuesday announcing the running order for his 1pm to 4pm slot along with assistant Chris Stark.

Editor Gordon Sutter told HTFP: “It was quite a week for celebrity advertisers in the Southern Daily Echo, first Coldplay and then Scott Mills. I wonder who’ll be next.

“It’s great to see that our adverts are making the headlines just as much as our own news stories.”

It is not the first time Mr Mills has promoted the regional press on the air.

Earlier this year he reviewed a copy of the Doncaster Free Press while Doncaster musician Yungblud was a guest on his programme.
