City daily runs special late edition to mark patch sporting hero’s death

A city daily ran a special late edition today following the death of one of its patch’s sporting heroes.

The Glasgow Evening Times produced the edition to mark the passing of footballer Billy McNeill, who captained Celtic FC’s famous ‘Lisbon Lions’ European Cup-winning side in 1967.

Mr McNeill had lived with dementia in recent years, and this morning it was announced that he had died yesterday aged 79.

The edition’s front page featured an image of him lifting the European Cup in Lisbon, where Celtic defeated Italian club Inter Milan to claim the trophy.

Evening Times news editor Deborah Anderson told HTFP: “The Evening Times was today saddened to report on the death of Celtic legend Billy McNeill.

“We took the decision to do a special morning edition as fans, former and current players and friends paid tribute to the former Lisbon Lion.

“There could only have been one picture for the special edition – holding the 1967 European Cup.

“Our combined team for print and online ensured that the story was out there on both platforms and also social media as soon as possible.”
