Celebration as new 12,500 arena named after regional daily opens

A regional daily has celebrated after a 12,500-capacity arena named after the newspaper opened to the public for the first time.

HTFP reporter in May how Aberdeen-based daily The Press & Journal had revealed the city’s new £333 million complex would officially be named P&J Live.

The agreement came after DC Thomson Media, the newspaper’s owner revealed it had struck a deal to become the inaugural naming rights sponsor of the venue.

The development was officially opened on Thursday, providing a splash for the P&J the following day.

An open day for the public was held on Saturday.

Louise Stewart, head of entertainment, exhibitions and marketing for the venue, told the P&J: “This day has been a long time coming and we cannot wait to welcome the public into P&J Live for the first time.

“We know they are going to love what they see, from the most modern arena in the country to the warm and welcoming bars and restaurant.

“The range of entertainment, activities and displays will reflect everything P&J Live will be offering in years to come – awesome acts, excellent events, stunning shows, fantastic food and drink and one of the best places in Scotland to spend an unforgettable night out.

“Everything we are offering tomorrow will be a stunning taster of what’s to come from P&J Live to bring a major boost to the people of the North-East and beyond.”

    It’s not exactly named after them if they’ve paid for the privilege, is it? Nobody at the AECC went ‘hey, the P&J is such an institution here we must name it after them’.
