Cairncross to discuss sustainable journalism at diversity conference

CairncrossDame Fraces Cairncross is set to discuss sustainable journalism at a conference aimed at promoting diversity in the industry today.

Dame Frances will be the keynote speaker at the NCTJ’s equality, diversity and inclusion conference, which is being held in London this morning.

In the session at Reuters, Dame Frances will appear ‘in conversation with’ Kim Fletcher, chairman of the NCTJ and editor of the British Journalism Review.

The pair will discuss the importance of high-quality journalism in a challenging world, the role of training in sustaining professional news media, and how innovation can play a role in engaging audiences and therefore contributing to sustainability.

A review into the future of news provision in the UK by Dame Frances earlier this year called for the establishment of a publicly funded Institute for Public Interest News.

She also backed the expansion of the local democracy reporting scheme between the BBC and regional press.

Other speakers at today’s conference Alison Gow, editor-in-chief (digital) at Reach plc, and Newsquest editorial development director Toby Granville.
