Weekly to face regional and national daily competition for top award

A weekly newspaper is set to go up against regional daily and national competition for a prestigious industry award.

The Hereford Times has been nominated, along with the Manchester Evening News, for the Fujifilm Grand Prix at the forthcoming newsawards.

The awards, formerly known as The Newspaper Awards, celebrate excellence in both print production and digital innovation.

Also shortlisted for the Grand Prix are Johnston Press daily the i, the Financial Times, London Evening Standard, Daily Telegraph, The Guardian and The Times.

Elsewhere, the Cambridge Independent will defend its Weekly Newspaper of the Year crown after being nominated along with the Hampstead & Highgate Express, Isle of Man Examiner, Lynn News, New Milton Advertiser & Lymington Times and Stratford-upon-Avon Herald.

In the Regional Daily Newspaper of the Year category, the East Anglian Daily Times, Carlisle News & Star, Dundee Courier, Irish News, Yorkshire Post and Aberdeen daily the Press & Journal are shortlisted.

Other regional nominees at the awards include Trinity Mirror’s Belfast Live and In Your Area in the News Website of the Year category, along with Wolverhampton’s Express & Star, while Newcastle’s Chronicle Live brand and the Warrington Guardian are shortlisted for the Outstanding Use of Social Media prize.

Gary Cullum, director of newsawards, said: “Despite the challenges facing our industry, our judges have been presented with another fantastic array of entries from all over the world.

“They’ve seen exceptional print, innovative digital products and some wonderful commercial initiatives, which has resulted in an exciting list of 2018 finalists.”

All the winners will be announced at a black tie gala dinner on 18 April at the Royal Lancaster London.
