Weekly gets pop star and headteacher to re-enact 22-year-old kiss photo

A weekly newspaper reunited a pop star and a school headteacher to re-enact a kiss which appeared in its pages 22 years ago.

The Lincolnshire Free Press recreated Peter Andre’s visit to Gleed Girls’ School, in Spalding, which it reported on in 1996.

Earlier this month the Free Press ran a piece about the Mysterious Girl singer’s planned return to the town to switch on its Christmas lights, prompting memories of his trip two decades earlier to come flooding back to readers.

Among them was the school’s now-retired headmistress Mary Hurst, who had been kissed on the hand by Mr Andre upon his previous visit.

After she contacted the Free Press to share her memory of the incident, the paper decided to set up a reunion of the pair when he arrived in Spalding on Thursday for the switch-on.

Mr Andre obliged in re-eancting the picture, and the Free Press splashed on the meeting in this week’s edition.

Editor Jeremy Ransome told HTFP: “Peter Andre was a great sport and a thoroughly nice chap. He actually commented after the interview that regional press journalists are ‘always lovely to me’.

“Mary leaves Spalding to retire to Yorkshire soon and this was a lovely leaving present for her.”
