Weekly commemorates football pioneer with wraparound supplement

A weekly which successfully campaigned to commemorate a “pioneering” former footballer and anti-racism campaigner has run a front page wraparound supplement in his memory.

HTFP previously reported how the Coventry Observer called for a celebration of Cyrille Regis to take place in the city, following his death in January at the age of 59.

As a result, a service will be held at Coventry Cathedral this Sunday, while tributes will also be paid at Coventry City, his former club, at their match tomorrow (Saturday).

Ahead of the weekend’s commemoration, the Observer ran an eight-page wraparound pull-out to mark the occasion.

Cyrille

Editor Les Reid told HTFP: “Our editorial in January after Cyrille’s untimely passing called for a public celebration at Coventry Cathedral. The cathedral and his family responded by saying they’d be ‘greatly honoured’ and talks began.

“We felt it was important for the city of Coventry to have its own public memorial tribute service. As a great footballer and someone who stood against racism with quiet dignity, he is as loved and respected here as at West Bromwich Albion and throughout the country. His seven years at Coventry City included what he called his career highlight – the still celebrated 1987 FA Cup victory – which remains an important date in the city’s history.

“Our eight-page wraparound pull-out this week comes ahead of a weekend of tributes at Coventry’s home match – a special Legends Day – and Sunday’s service.

“Our supplement includes contributions from coveted Coventry City authors, a pull-out cathedral Order of Service, rare photos, and comment and interviews with the service’s participants. They include 1987 teammate Greg Downs, the Archbishop of York, and Neville Staple of Coventry’s finest band The Specials.”

Really good and worthy cover wrap utilising the masthead and clear of any adverts which is how it should be, a fitting tribute to Cyrille Regis from the city and demonstrating how it should be done, adding value without compromising integrity
    Well done Cov Obs
