Two universities take four prizes apiece at student journalism awards

Two universities took four awards apiece as journalism students were honoured for their work at an annual ceremony.

More than 200 students, academics and industry leaders attended the Scottish Student Journalism Awards 2018, with Stirling University and Glasgow Caledonian University proving the night’s biggest winners.

Glasgow Caledonian student Selena Jackson won both Student of the Year and Feature of the Year, while Stephen Couse and David Brockett, who also study at the same university, won the Mobile Journalism and Sports Story of the Year categories respectively.

Stirling’s Rozlyn Little won both Scoop of the Year and News Story of the Year for her interview with Luke Mitchell, who was convicted of the murder of Jodi Jones when he was just 15.

Two other Stirling students also triumphed – Douglas Matheson won Broadcast Journalist of the Year while Ryan Peteranna won Column of the Year.

The event itself was organised by Glasgow Clyde College, and held at the city’s St Andrew’s in the Square church.

Scottish Newspaper Society director John McLellan said: “The Scottish Students Journalism Awards are a brilliant showcase for young journalists, and our congratulations go to all the winners and finalists.

“But it’s also a demonstration of the belief in the importance of journalism that so many talented young people want to be involved.

“Glasgow Clyde College did a fantastic job in pulling the whole award scheme together and we look forward to being involved in an even bigger and better event next year.”
