Regional racing tipsters top national summer competition table

Two regional horse racing tipsters have been crowned the nation’s best after a summer-long competition.

Sheffield daily The Star’s tipster, who writes under the pseudonym ‘Phosphor’, has been crowned the 2018 champion of the Racing Post Flat Naps competition.

The contest has seen regional and national journalists ranked on the quality of their racing tips over the course of the summer’s flat season.

Gloucestershire Echo news and racing reporter Melissa Jones, pictured, was ahead going into the final day of competition, but Phosphor took the first prize of £4,000 with a +£30.67 (to a mythical £1 stake) profit for the season.

Melissa, 32, who took home a £1,500 runner-up prize, said: “Congratulations to the winner, it takes some nerve to put up such a big-priced selection under pressure and they pulled it off.

“I’m pleased to finish in the top three in this competition for the third time, a first position of note for the Flat season.

“I’m grateful for the support I’ve had throughout and look forward to trying to go one better during the National Hunt campaign.”

Last year Charlie Croasdale, of North Wales daily The Leader, claimed the top prize. HTFP has approached The Star for a comment.
