Regional journalist to examine patch’s unsolved killings in new podcasts

A regional journalist’s new podcast is set to examine some of his historic patch’s most notorious unsolved murders.

Archant investigations editor Tom Bristow is launching a series of podcasts called Unfinished, which will look at mysteries from across East Anglia.

The first episode will look at the death of 14-year-old schoolgirl Johanna Young, whose body was found floating face down in a pond on Boxing Day 1992.

Johanna, who had gone missing three days earlier, had a fractured skull and was unconscious, but still alive when put in to the freezing water.

Arrests were made at the time of her death and most recently in 2014, when two men were quizzed but later let go without charge.

Tom told the Eastern Daily Press: “After 26 years the memories of some of those who remember Johanna and the case has faded, so I want to get audio recordings of what people do remember from that time before memories fade further.

“I’ve started interviewing people and I’ve already stumbled across some very interesting things.”

He added: “Podcasts give the opportunity to tell stories in great depth and in a way which you just can’t do in newspapers or online.

“This case has not been told in great detail since the early 90s so I think it is high time it was explored again.”

The podcast will be available to download from iTunes and this website later this autumn.

I’m sorry, but I still don’t understand how podcasts are supposed to pay for themselves. At the very least this has to pay for the time it takes up of Mr Bristow’s working week, surely. Do Archant senior staff think such a podcast will make people then go out and buy the likes of the EDP? Good luck with that one…

Considering the long list of unsolved murders in Norfolk alone, this latest project should keep Mr Bristow busy for a very long time indeed
Good luck with the headless corpse mystery..

True,so why not scrap all the ailing dailies and weeklies that hardly anyone’s buying anymore and produce a news podcast instead?
Less staff needed,no expensive offices, no newsprint or distribution costs, no multi layer of managers managing other managers, it’s the way forward!
Just need to work out how to monetise it and bingo! Jobs a good un

Podcasts?? They generate nothing in revenue whatsoever on this scale.
Why not serialise his investigation in the paper to at least drive some sales. I doubt the EDP have a target for podcast numbers. I’m sure when Tom’s engagement numbers are down – his editor will tell him to wind up his podcast and concentrate on his page views.
