Publisher launches new weekly with nod to defunct evening title

Regional publisher Newsquest is launching another new weekly newspaper in the North West, in a nod to a daily title last published 35 years ago.

The Burnley Star will hit the newsstands tomorrow in the latest of a series of new launches in the region by the publishing giant.

Its name is a nod to the group’s former Burnley Evening Star title which covered the patch until its closure in 1983.

The new free title, which will be edited by Lancashire Telegraph editor Steve Thompson, will feature a full nostalgia page delving into the archives of its forerunner.

The Star’s launch follows those of the Oldham Times, the Warrington Post and the Blackburn Post over the past year.

Its claret and blue masthead mirrors the colours of the town’s football club, which is currently edging Leicester City in the ‘best of the rest’ race to finish 7th in the Premier League.

Said Steve: “This is an exciting time for us and for Burnley and this new title is a real vote of confidence in the town.

“Burnley is a place on the up – not least because of the success of the football club – and the Star will feature a full five pages on the Clarets every week.

“We’ll also have a regular crime and court page and a strong mix of hard news, business and ‘what’s on’ coverage.

“The initial reaction from advertisers has been overwhelmingly positive. This is a patch our reporters here in Lancashire know very well and this new title launch will give us a renewed focus on Burnley and the surrounding area.”

A previous free title serving the town, the Burnley Citizen, was closed by Newsquest in November 2014 and replaced with a free Burnley edition of the Lancashire Telegraph, with a distribution of 10,000 copies each Thursday.

The free Burnley edition of the Telegraph will now cease although paid-for copies of the Telegraph will continue to be available in the town.

Have they ditched the Burnley edition of the Telegraph full stop? Be a shame if that’s the case. Telegraph was a good two edition daily that was the envy of many when I worked in Bolton.
