Anti-fake news ads could be introduced in regional press

A national newspaper advertising campaign launched to combat fake news could be rolled out to regional titles too.

The Independent Press Standards Organisation is running an advert in many national papers with the aim of highlighting its work.

The ad highlights the IPSO ‘mark’ – a symbol carried by newspapers and magazines regulated by the organisation to show that they are produced to high standards required by the Editors’ Code of Practice and that they have made themselves accountable by submitting to the rulings of an independent regulator.

According to IPSO,the ad makes the point that “fake news is not welcome where you see the mark and demonstrates that, by following the Editors’ Code, IPSO regulated publications are committed to high standards and accurate reporting”.

An IPSO spokeswoman told HTFP it is hoped that regional titles will also carry the ads soon.

Matt Tee

IPSO chief executive Matt Tee, pictured, said: “IPSO has developed some great services for the public and it’s important that people are more aware of them.

“A key part of IPSO’s work is to empower the public, whether that is enabling them to differentiate between professional content and internet dross or giving them a leg up, so that people who have been wronged can get restitution, without paying huge legal fees.”

The ad will initially appear in The Sun, Daily Mirror, Daily Mail, Daily Telegraph, Daily Star, Daily Express, and The Times, as well as associated Sunday titles.

    What a load of tosh.
And how ironic a fake news ad will be piloted in papers known for fake news.
You really couldn’t make it up.

Dear gods are the public really that stupid now?
Has it really come to this?
Time for the human race to give-up methinks.
