Landlords admit ‘sex for rent’ deals as journalism student exposes city scandal

ClaisseA journalism student has exposed a ‘sex for rent’ scandal in the city where she studies – with more than 10 landlords admitting they had entered into such arrangements with “vulnerable” female students previously.

Claisse Opulencia, left, a third-year student at Canterbury Christ Church University, was offered a ‘sex for rent’ deal by 18 different people after going undercover and posting an advertisement online.

One respondent to her enquiry listed what would be required of her should she accept such an arrangement, which included sex once a week, as well as a “b***job a day” and wearing whatever he wanted her to around the house for an hour a day.

Another Canterbury landlord offered a room to stay as long as she was “willing to give herself” to him, and admitted he had previously had a ‘sex for rent’ arrangement with a student who recently finished university.

A third told her he had been involved in such an arrangement with an international student for around eight months, and was “intimate” with her around four or five times a week during that time.

Claisse, who is editor-in-chief of her university’s student publication UNIfied, later contacted the landlords under her real identity – with only one responding to defend the practice.

The man described it as a “win-win situation” for both parties and said he “didn’t see anything wrong” with it.

Claisse’s investigation has since been picked up by Kent Online, as well as the Daily Mail, Daily Mirror and The Sun.

Her exposé comes after similar investigations were run by Wales Online’s Bronte Howard and the Liverpool Echo’s Emilia Bona.

The Echo reported two men to Merseyside Police after Emilia’s investigation, and provided officers with all the available information at its disposal.

Under the Sexual Offences Act 2003, ‘sex for rent’ arrangements are against the law because a crime is committed when a person causes or incites another to become a prostitute.

Claisse told HTFP: “I heard it was happening somewhere else around the country but did not expect it to be happening here in my student city. Unfortunately, it’s true – sex for rent is being offered to vulnerable students. I was completely shocked.

“I didn’t expect to get a single response from my advert, so you can only imagine my face when I received texts from men explicitly asking me for sexual favours in exchange for a free room.

“I’m hoping uncovering the story has deterred landlords from offering this sort of arrangement – and police will have a crack down on the landlords who are and prosecute them.

“Most of the response has been good, people are acknowledging that a sex for rent deal is a form of sexual exploitation. But some aren’t, it only needs to happen to their daughter or sister or mothers for them to see the real danger.”

good work. These women would be extremely vulnerable and in some cases desperate, which makes the opportunism of the men even more despicable in exploiting them.
