Journalists urged to air views on industry for new NCTJ research

ian-hargreavesRegional journalists are being urged to give their views on journalism training and the media industry for a new piece of research.

The National Council for the Training of Journalists wants people to take part in a survey to help inform its work on qualifications, training and diversity.

The NCTJ says the research will provides an “important source of information about the journalism labour market for everyone who has an interest in journalism and how things are changing”.

The findings will update previous reports – Journalists at work: their views on training, recruitment and conditions – which were published in 2002 and 2012.

Research will be led by the team at the centre of the previous reports – Ian Hargreaves, professor of digital economy at Cardiff University, is advising the NCTJ and Mark Spilsbury is the research consultant, while NCTJ chief executive Joanne Butcher is overseeing the project.

Ian, pictured, said: “We waited ten years to update the original 2002 Journalists at Work research and there had been dramatic changes to journalism in that decade.

“I’m delighted the NCTJ has decided, due to the speed of change, to bring forward its plans and to invest in a major update of the research now.”

The online survey of working journalists will be open for four weeks and is completely confidential, with no individuals being identified in the analysis or report.
