Journalist scoops awards hat-trick as newspaper wins five prizes

A Sunday journalist scooped a hat-trick of prizes at an awards ceremony showcasing the best of the Scottish press.

Sunday Post journalist Gordon Blackstock won the Journalist of the Year, Reporter of the Year and Scoop of the Year awards at the 39th Scottish Press Awards, which were held in Glasgow last night.

The Dundee-based Post was also crowned Newspaper of the Year and won Front Page of the Year for its ‘Hundreds of Orphans’ splash, pictured below, while the East Lothian Courier won Weekly Newspaper of the Year.

Dani Garavelli, from Scotland on Sunday, was awarded the Nicola Barry prize, a new accolade introduced this year by the Scottish Press Awards in honour of the journalist who died after a long illness.

The award was created for women journalists with the aim of encouraging campaigning journalism, which Nicola Barry, the award-winning columnist and feature writer was known for during her career.

Other awards announced included the Lifetime Achievement Award, which was awarded to Tom Shields, while the Sunday Mail won Journalism Team of the Year and The Courier was awarded Campaign of the Year for its Frank’s Law initiative.
